Choose a test-day car you feel confident driving

Using your own car can be convenient. Hiring a car for your driving test can also make sense if you do not have a suitable vehicle or want to use the car you have practised in during lessons.

The best choice is a familiar, well-maintained car that meets the NSW driving test requirements. This guide explains what to check, what to ask a hire provider and how to prepare for test day.

Your three options for test day

1. Use your own car

A personal or family car can keep costs down and may already feel familiar. Check its condition well before your appointment, and make sure you can comfortably operate the controls and complete manoeuvres in it.

2. Hire a car specifically for the test

A dedicated test-day hire service can help when you do not have access to a suitable vehicle. Confirm that the provider permits driving tests, accepts your licence type and has appropriate insurance arrangements for your use.

Ask which car you will receive and arrange practice in it beforehand where possible. A standard rental agreement may have learner-driver or driving-test restrictions, so check the terms before paying.

3. Use your driving school's car

If you have been learning in an instructor's car, using that vehicle can make test day feel more familiar. Ask your instructor about availability, any readiness assessment and what the test-day package includes.

No vehicle is guaranteed to pass the testing officer's inspection. A school or hire car still needs to be checked before the appointment.

Check that your vehicle is ready

Before booking a car, review the Service NSW practical driving test checklist. Allow time to fix any problems before test day.

  • Confirm the vehicle is registered and suitable for the licence class being tested.

  • Check the lights, lenses, tyres, wheels, mirrors, windscreen, seatbelts and headrests.

  • Keep the interior clean and secure loose items.

  • Make sure you can see clearly and operate the vehicle's controls confidently.

  • Confirm any required L-plates and your insurance or hire conditions.

If a required item is missing or a problem cannot be fixed in time, the test may be terminated. NSW Government guidance states that the booking fee is not refunded when a test is terminated, and you must pay to rebook.

What to ask before booking test-day car hire

  • Availability: Is the car available for your test centre, date and appointment time?

  • Inclusions: Does the price cover a warm-up lesson, travel, waiting time and the return trip?

  • Vehicle: Is it automatic or manual, and can you practise in the same car beforehand?

  • Terms: What happens if your test is rescheduled, you cancel or the car becomes unavailable?

  • Insurance: Are you covered for the test, and what excess or exclusions apply?

Confirm the total price in writing. Do not assume a vehicle-hire package includes the separate Service NSW test booking fee.

Prepare for a calmer test day

Practise in the chosen car so you know its steering, braking, blind spots and parking reference points. A warm-up lesson can help you settle in, but no lesson, vehicle or practice route guarantees a pass.

Check your documents and appointment details in advance. Service NSW asks you to arrive at least 15 minutes before your test. Plan your transport home as well, including a suitable licensed driver if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, provided it is suitable for your test and meets the vehicle requirements. Check its condition ahead of time; the testing officer will also inspect it before the test.

Check directly with the rental provider. You need permission to use the car for a driving test, and the agreement and insurance must cover your licence type and intended use.

You can use a suitable personal car for a NSW car driving test, so hiring a dual-control vehicle is not compulsory. If you choose a school car, ask the instructor to explain its controls and test-day arrangements.

It can be a good option when you have practised in that car and feel comfortable driving it. Compare familiarity, availability, condition and the total package cost before deciding.

If the issue cannot be fixed in time, your test may be terminated. The booking fee is not refunded for a terminated test, and you will need to pay to rebook. Check the hire provider's separate cancellation and replacement-car terms too.
