To become a NSW driving instructor, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • You must hold a current NSW driver licence for the class of vehicle you want to teach, and have held it for at least three years in the last four years (excluding any time you were disqualified).

  • You must have a good driving record, with no more than 10 demerit points in the last three years, no licence suspensions or cancellations in the last four years, and no convictions for drink driving, drug driving, or other serious offences in the last 10 years.

  • You must pass a medical examination and a police check.

  • You must complete an approved driving instructor training course, which covers topics such as road rules, teaching methods, communication skills, risk management, and business practices.

  • You must pass a driving instructor knowledge test and a driving test, which assess your ability to drive safely and instruct effectively.

Once you obtain your driving instructor licence, you can start working as a driving instructor, either independently or with a driving school. You will need to renew your licence every three years, and complete at least 12 hours of professional development activities every year.
